Character ANalysis
Kate Malone:
1.) "On the outside I am good Kate, Rev. Jack Malone`s girl, isn`t she sweet, she helps so much with the house, so sad about her mother, and she`s smart too,"(3).
This shows Kate`s mother-like behavior and how kate had to take the place of her mom when she passed away. She really seems really nice and responsible from a strangers point of view.
2.) "On the inside I am bad Kate, daughter of no one... thinks she's all that, prays with her eyes open, let`s her boyfriend put his hands all over her, Miss perfect, Miss suck-up, disrespectful, disagreeable, still waters run deep and dirty, she`s going to lose it just you watch, I`ve seen her type before,"(3).
This shows how Kate feels like she is a horrible person and how she really isn`t like what it may seem, like she seems so perfect its a disaster. It shows her way of thinking, she responds oppositely then what she really thinks inside.
3.) "Religion is good, apparently. Millions of people seem to enjoy it. But I`m not buying it, especially the brand-name version my dad says," (20).
When Kate says this, it displays her hate for religion. She hates because there is no exact evidence of any kind of religion. Also it shows her annoyance she has for her dad because it is what he does for a living.
4.) "Nobody else has to play the role of sweet little preacher`s girl in addition to getting into college and ironing clothes and feeding the pets and making sure my brother takes his medicine," (21).
Kate had taken the role of her mom when her mom had died. Kate takes care of the whole family including pets, so she believes that it makes her life a lot harder. Also she has to carry the worrying of getting accepted to the only college she applied to, making her stress levels even higher.
5.) "All right, here`s the deal. I`m still waiting to hear from MIT. I`m not making any decisions until I get their letter. It`ll be here any day," (18).
Kate shows determination. She wants to only go to one college so she will except no other option. I feel that because Kate had extreme determination to get into MIT, it made her struggle more of when she wasn`t excepted and then she also had to deal with Teri, making the whole situation more complicated.

Literary Elements
1.)Pun:
"They never proved who put the skunk in Amber`s pearl-white Jetta, but it didn`t matter. The message was scent," (35).
This is a pun because instead of using the word sent, the author said scent, which is humorous because it was a skunk that was the main focus of the sentence. The author used this so it would keep the reader focused on what she was really saying, also because it was funny and added comedy to the book.
2.)Simile:
"My brain feels like a Slurpee, cold and slow,"(68).
The author uses this to describe Kate`s feeling once her dad arrived to give the envelope to Kate about MIT. Using this simile, it really describes and gives the reader an idea of just how Kate feels during this part of the book.
3.)Personification:
"The moon is swimming through the window, casting silk shadows," (165).
This is personification because the moon can not really swim, and personification is giving an object human abilities, making this statement personification. The author uses this to give the reader an idea of the scenery and setting, like setting the mood.
4.)Onomatopoeia:
"They bring that extra something, that oomph," (180).
This statement is an onomatopoeia because it is a word that describes a sound. When the author says oomph, she describes what some people need in order to get into MIT.
5.)Allusion:
"Betty changes to a dirge. No more Sesame Street," (193).
This is an allusion because it is a reference to another peace of work, the peace of work in this allusion is Sesame Street which is a Kids TV show that a character in the book, Mikey, really liked. When the author says this allusion, she describes one of the things Mikey liked, she also described what the funeral was like, giving the reader an idea of what it sounded like in the setting.
