Grief- There is grief in the book because there is death in the book and also when Kate wasn`t accepted to MIT. An example of grief: " Maybe the real letter, the acceptance letter, is hidden in there, written in invisible ink on invisible, space-age paper," (69). This is an example of grief because avoiding the truth is a sign of grief. Kate didn`t want to believe she was unaccepted to the college.
Education- Education is a theme because it is one of the main problems in the book. Kate only wants to go MIT, no where else. The theme is education because when Kate says, "MIT is the only option I care about," (18). Education is the theme in this book because of the college, MIT.
Religion- Religion is also another theme because it is one of the many problems that Kate has to deal with. Religion is a theme when it says, "He knows I`m allergic to the G-word. He does it just to annoy me,"(20). Religion is the main reason Kate has conflicts with her dad. It also makes death harder for her because when she believes in no afterlife, what else could she believe if she only used scientific answers.
